current work
Kelsey Barton's current work explores the poetics of materiality, drawing from the geologic world—megaliths, fossil forms, and stratified matter—as both reference and collaborator. Using clay as a medium of deep time, she builds forms that echo tessellated surfaces, stone stacks, and ancient monoliths, seeking a meditative presence through repetition and process. At once archaeological and intimate, her sculptures investigate the impulse to preserve, the beauty of erosion, and the quiet collaboration between human hand and natural force. These objects echo the contemplative presence of Ancient Chinese Scholar's Rocks, serving as meditative anchors both during their meticulous construction and in the act of viewing—where the careful placement of tiles invites sustained, focused looking.
